I often pinch myself with this job. Beautiful days just happen before my eyes and I get to photograph them AS MY JOB. I see amazing venues, get to know some seriously lovely brides and grooms, take trips to parts of the country I wouldn’t necessarily have had the fortune to visit… Where am I going with this? Well, to Spain.
Ruth and I met at University, on the rugby pitch no less (another story for another day, but yes, I attempted the sport on numerous occasions) and kept in touch over the years through Facebook and mutual friends. Not only is Ruth smart, funny and jaw-droppingly stunning, she’s also incredibly brave – moving to Spain to teach and begin life in the sun with her brilliant man, Jamie.
When Ruth and Jamie asked me to come out to the Costa Brava to shoot their wedding it took me a while to say yes. (That a total lie. I said yes instantly.) Having never shot a wedding abroad before it was a big bag of logistical questions swimming round my head – how to get kit there, recce-ing the venue, driving on the wrong side of the road, relying on flights not to be delayed to name but a few. But two things kept jumping to the front of my brain – Ruth & Jamie and the light. The lovely Spanish light – all that warmth would be surrounding these two gorgeous people on the happiest day of their lives. My concerns were silly – not only did the entire trip go smoothly, but there was an extra challenge to face – in between booking me and the wedding I had Seb! So not only did I ship my kit out with me, I also had Mr O and the wee man along for the trip too! And it was wonderful.
The wedding. Oh the wedding… There are beautiful settings and then there’s El Far. Sea views that go on forever, watched over by a lighthouse. A roofless courtyard surrounded by warm brick and curving architecture. Love. Ruth & Jamie’s day was laced throughout with Spanish traditions – kicking off the party to allow for a siesta being one! Her stunning dress, his bespoke kilt that, literally, sparkled, their amazingly lovely family and friends, I could go on all day.
I felt truly honoured to not only be asked to travel out for their wedding, but to witness a celebration so full of happiness and love. It will remain with me for a very long time xx
